What Sets Alpha Academy Apart From Other Programs?
Alpha Academy is distinctive from many programs in two major respects:
-
We are not for “at-risk” individuals. This is our biggest, and most misunderstood, distinction. There are many resources available for people who have already drifted 180 degrees off course. Unfortunately, there are very few places to turn for people who haven’t messed up – yet. We want to be a resource for the young man who simply does not know what to do with his life.
Although some of our students have had encounters with the law or with substance abuse, we are not a halfway house, boot camp, military school, rehab facility, or any type of correctional program. We are a mentoring program for young men serious about setting a positive course for their lives. Drugs, alcohol and tobacco are not allowed for Alpha Academy students (on or off-campus).
- We only work with adults. Alpha Academy is designed for college-aged young men (18-22). That means a couple different things.
- First, coming to Alpha is an adult decision the student makes, and he cannot be sent here by his family or a judge. All of our students are here because they want to be here, and we treat them as adults.
- Second, although there are many leadership programs available for juveniles, there are few options for young men who are over 18. Even though they are legally adults, many young men do not yet have the skills to make the life-altering decisions (career, education, relationships, etc.) they are now facing. We want to be a resource for these young men over 18, to help them make the best decisions they can.
